Hot Spring Ecosystems

Hot springs support a stunning diversity of thermofluidic microorganism, many of which rely on geochemical sources of energy.  We are studying the links between hot spring chemistry and biology at Yellowstone National Park Field and laboratory analytical data, together with thermodynamic calculations, allow us to quantify the energy supply from hundreds of reactions used by microbes.  Ranking the energy supply leads to testable hypotheses about the community structure of microorganisms.  Our goal is to develop predictable methods for microbiology derived from geochemical variables
