GEOPIG Gas Chromatography Lab

The Varian CP-3800 Gas Chromatograph is setup for running gases and for running liquid samples for dissolved organic analysis. The system has two injectors, one for gases and one for liquids.

The gas analysis setup consists of a two packed columns (Molsieve 13X80/100 and Poropak Q 80/100), a methanizer, a thermal conductivity detector (TCD), and a flame ionization detector (FID).  The way it is plumbed now allows you analyze for hydrogen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and methane in one run using the TCD detector and one of the FID detectors. This setup can also be used to analyze for alkanes and alkenes, as well as oxygen and other gases depending on you choice of carrier gas (nitrogen or argon).

The dissolved organic analysis is done through a CP1177 split/splitless injector, a Supelcowax-10 capillary column and one of the FID detectors. With the column installed it is currently setup for looking at polar organics such as alcohols, although it works for ketones and aldehydes. Carrier gas is helium.

For both gases and liquids, the injectors are set up for manual injection (i.e. there is no autosampler or injection valve).
